Closing time♫
You don't have to go home but you can't stay here ♫

Can't you imagine yourself just wiping the counters at the Nugget singing along? No, okay well if you're a busy college student and you're looking to make some money start at The Beach!

Cal State Long Beach is one of the city's biggest employers; after all, serving over 36,000 students is a lot of work!

The first stop is 49er Shops. This corporation houses the bookstore, convenience stores, dining halls, dining services, catering, and ID services.

They often have job openings in the beginning of each semester and all post on this website:
https://www.49ershopsjobs.com/applicants/jsp/shared/Welcome_css.jsp

Not all the posts are minimum wage jobs or even food service either! My first job with 49er Shops was working as an administrative assistant for the dining services, also known as the University Dining Plaza that has delicious food options like the popular BeachWalk Cafe.

The majority of the job openings require little to zero work experience, which is perfect for all college students that need to build a resume.

The work schedules are often flexible and in most departments, there are enough people to switch shifts with.

"The best thing about working on campus is your supervisors really work around your schedule. Since they work on a college campus they know what it's like for students and they really strive to make sure you can work and go to school comfortably," said junior journalism major and marketing minor Rebecca Ruiz.

Best of all, is that 49er Shops has many employee incentives and functions throughout the year. Their Bowling for Books program has raised over $200,000 to help pay for expensive textbooks. This year it  was held on April 12 and brought student-employees together for a night of fun and raising money for book scholarships.

They also have monthly Bravo Awards for employees that personify the company's values throughout the month. They are entered into a drawing for AMC movie tickets.

Another great way to find an on-campus job is through BeachLink.
http://careers.csulb.edu/job_search/beachlink.htm

Once you sign in, under the jobs/internship drop-down menu in the navigation bar, click on BeachLink jobs.
Check under POSITION TYPE and select ON-CAMPUS PART TIME, and there you go! All the jobs available in other departments.

They can range from jobs at the SWRC to administrative positions at Brotman Hall. Some of these positions are year-round, so it's not too late to find a job!

Good luck party people!

CSULB Mobile app, YOU CARE!

It's no mystery that college students are glued to their smart phones! CSULB caught up with the times and made a mobile app for us!

The home page has two screens to swipe
Version 1.0 was released back in November of 2012 by Desire2Learn Incorporated and has gotten some bugs fixed since then.

ASI members Duong Vuong, Aaron Elimelech, Rachel Hendrickson, Elizabeth Renteria, and Sahil Bhalla helped develop the app to tailor CSULB students.

The main features on the application surround basic student needs:

  • News: ASI updates, sports coverage, campus events, and BeachSync access for organizations
  • Dining: which includes all restaurants on campus and residential dining hall options.
  • General info: access to BeachBoard, library services, weather, campus directory, police contact numbers, transit and 49er Shops bookstore shopping.
The neat thing is all windows are contained within the application.

Desire2Learn is the website that houses BeachBoard after the transition from BlackBoard happened a couple years ago.

The application has everything 49ers would need to know, at the touch of their fingertips.

Senior business major Michelle Herrara has it on her smartphone, "I love it for the shuttle times" she said.

The crazy thing is the times are accurate! CSULB mobile has arrival times for both campus shuttles and city bus routes near campus.

The mobile app also has updated campus news from all publications including the Daily 49er, ASI Newsletter, Inside CSULB, Beach Review, and EmeriTies.

Student publications are updated daily, so if you don't have time to pick up a hardcopy of the Daily 49er, not to worry! The same stories are available on the CSULB application.

For sports fans, there is an athletics menu that has headlines, scores and upcoming games so you'll never miss a beat.

The Dining button is very useless, simply because it serves little to hungry students that may want to look up menus or food prices. The ResDining menu is very helpful because it lists food options for each dining hall for each day. They had blueberry pancakes today! YUM!

Overall, it's a handy service to have for anyone armed with a smartphone. "It's a good tool to have. If you're on a wifi network, it's smooth" senior engineering major Alex Armas reminds us.

We have all struggled with BeachNet+ on campus, but with regular wifi the application isn't as slow.

Thank you ASI, Desire2Learn, Information Technology Services and Division of Student Services for such a great resource for students!

GO BEACH!
